My Cleaning Practices: Keeping your horse safe and healthy

As an equine massage therapist, your horse’s health and safety are always my top priority. Because I travel from barn to barn, maintaining strict hygiene practices is essential. I want every client to feel confident knowing I follow a thorough cleaning and sanitation routine before and after each session.

Vigilant Barn-to-Barn Sanitation

Between every appointment, I take the time to clean and disinfect all tools, equipment, and surfaces I use. This reduces the risk of spreading germs, bacteria, or irritants from one environment to another. Whether I’m working in a busy boarding facility or a private barn, the same high standards apply.

My Disinfection Practices

I use Chlorhexidine (often referred to as “Chlorhex”), a trusted, veterinarian-recommended antiseptic. It’s known for being:

  • Effective against a wide range of bacteria and pathogens

  • Safe for use around animals when properly diluted

  • Long-lasting, offering continued protection even after cleaning

  • Gentle on equipment and surfaces

This ensures that massage tools, hands, grooming aids, and any surfaces I come into contact with are properly sanitized.

What I Clean Between Every Session

To protect your horse, I thoroughly disinfect:

  • My hands and arms

  • Massage tools

  • Grooming equipment

  • Lead ropes or surfaces I handle

  • My workspace and any equipment used at your barn

I also wash and rotate all towels, wraps, and fabrics after every horse — never reused between barns.

Protecting Your Barn’s Biosecurity

I understand how quickly illness can spread in equine environments. By maintaining strict hygiene standards, I do my part to help protect:

  • Young horses

  • Senior horses

  • Immune-compromised horses

  • High-performance athletes

  • Barn populations that have frequent visitors
